RealRank Example

I've seen a lot of people in the forums and the comments in the blog asking about RealRank.  I personally think that Ted and Pete have done a good job explaining it, but I thought I'd try and make it clear as mud with an example.  If any of my assumptions are wrong, I hope that Ted/Pete will fix my errors.

Some Example Blogger Ranks (what the bloggers see):
Blogger 1's Real Rank - 52
Blogger 2's Real Rank - 75
Blogger 3's Real Rank - 13
Blogger 4's Real Rank - 93

The question every blogger has on their mind is, "What does this mean?"  Well, if you don't know how many bloggers are using the ITK (PPP Tools), then it doesn't mean much.  However, if Ted decides to release the number of bloggers with ITK installed, then you'll be able to understand a little better how your blog compares to the other postie's blogs.  Remember this number probably changes every day as people add and remove the ITK, so I'm not sure Ted will ever release this number (or it least the related` 1-9 filter advertisers use).  However, you could also ask around the forum and get an idea of the blogger with the highest RealRank to get an idea of how many bloggers have the ITK installed.

Let's assume in the above example scenario that there are 100 bloggers using the ITK.  Advertisers have to choose a number between 1 and 9 to filter bloggers.  Here's an example list of bloggers available to an advertiser using the RealRank filter (using our simple 100 blogger example):
RealRank 9 - Bloggers Ranked 1-10 are eligible
RealRank 8 - Bloggers Ranked 1-20 are eligible
RealRank 7 - Bloggers Ranked 1-30 are eligible
RealRank 6 - Bloggers Ranked 1-40 are eligible
RealRank 5 - Bloggers Ranked 1-50 are eligible
RealRank 4 - Bloggers Ranked 1-60 are eligible
RealRank 3 - Bloggers Ranked 1-70 are eligible
RealRank 2 - Bloggers Ranked 1-80 are eligible
RealRank 1 - Bloggers Ranked 1-90 are eligible
No Filter - Bloggers Ranked 1-100 are eligible along with all blogs without the ITK installed

Using the example blogger Real Ranks from above, the following would occur:
Blogger 1 can take a RealRank filter of 4 or lower
Blogger 2 can take a RealRank filter of 2 or lower
Blogger 3 can take a RealRank filter of 8 or lower
Blogger 4 can only take an opp without a RealRank filter

I think it's important to note that if bloggers focus on creating good content and generating quality traffic to their blog, then RealRank will take care of itself.

What's more important is that Advertisers understand how to use RealRank as a proper filter.  If an advertiser sets the RealRank filter too high, then they might not get their opportunity filled.  An advertiser that sets the RealRank filter too low won't be getting all the views they could have possibly gotten with higher ranked blogs.

Of course, if you're an advertiser just looking for feedback like the CarGuys, then set the RealRank filter aside and enjoy access to Izea's entire collection of bloggers.

I still don't understand why the advertisers are being given the option of asking for a certain RealRank in their opps, when we don't even know whether or not we have that rank! For now, we are just going on the presumption that if we can see an opp, we can take it. But we all know from experience that sometimes, that isn't true. It would really be helpful if Ted would let us know at least an approximate number so we can guesstimate what our opp RR is.

Of course, that's just my opinion.

Elizabeth,
Talking to Ted today it sounded like they are going to show a person's rank(the 1-9 number). I bet that's on Pete's long to do list.

Real Rank will only work if advertisers buy into it. And to do that, we are going to need to get the word out and increase the people plugged into RealRank. Because right now, the world spins on google, like it or not, and I have not been getting opps from other advertising sites because my pr has dropped from 3 to 0.

I understand the system. My blog today is ranked 574 and I took an opportunity that the only qualification was that I was in the top 20% of blogs. So if I am right at 20, that means there are around 3600 blogs. If I am at 10 percent, then that would mean there are 5740 blogs. Just information for chewing on.

Again, I have to say that RR is a good idea but accomplishes nothing if advertisers don't use it. Are advertisers receiving any education on RealRank? The new opps I've seen are still based on PR. Are there any PR5 posties still on PPP? I doubt it. PR5s are now PR0-2.

Not telling a postie where they are in the scheme of the system is somewhat counterproductive. If I have a rank of 300 I'd like to know what I'm ranked, 1-9.

Something I'm sure is already on someone's to do list already would be adding the RR number of a site, if available, to the PPP toolbar in firefox, and RR badges for our blogs. Would help with wider adoption, when they're ready to roll it out for the general public.

I agree with Steve, I do not need a number I need to know where I rank in 1-10 scale.

BTW - This PR thing has cut my blogging income in half, thank goodness it got reduces right before Christmas, My children only need 1 sock. :(

Cheers

I know we are all going to have to wait it out, but in the meantime we are all losing money we counted on. And if we find other ways to fill that, why would we come back?
PPP needs to cut out the PR option for advertisers to even choose from. We all lost our PR because of advertisers needing us to advertise for them.
If it is not even an option for them to choose from, we all start winning again.
However, the idea that a link is only valid if it has been clicked on THAT DAY is really bad. I can see weekly clicking, but daily? Everyone will need to have have hundreds of people linking to them each and every day to get enough new links for people to click on.
The sidebar links are rarely clicked on, so you need the links in posts, and if you get them put in posts, they will only be seen for a short period of time.
RR is not going to help the smaller, newer bloggers much. And I want it to work so badly.

I am sorry but this is starting to make less and less sense. So what you are telling the posties is that we can't know what our Real Rank is?

You are telling advertisers they can cut out say 75% of bloggers but they won't know what that leaves them with?

You telling me as an advertiser to ignore link value? Sorry with that I don't need PPP. To me the solution is simple...

First use a SOAP API to mine Yahoo Site Explorer go say three levels deep and assign a link value. Perhaps you include a sample of the site one that does take traffic into some account. Assign a value to the site based on the fact that other sites of value link to it and what links to them, toss in some factor for traffic and clicks and be don with it.

Now provide a java script tracking code for people to install so you don't need massive spiders to do all the work. BUT AND HERE IS THE BIG BUT

Now make this an Izea Product totaly divorced from PPP. Make it where I can set up account for my sites ALL OF THEM blogs or not. Promote it as TRUE ALTERNATIVE to PR for all sites.

Get thousands upon thousands of non blog sites using it. Promote it as a way for people to gauge SEO efforts, link building efforts and traffic results. Then Google can't ban, penalize, etc a site for using it.

PPP has been a real leader in blog marketing. Please think about bit smarter about all this. If a guy in Dallas can figure this out in a few minutes over a cup of coffee certainly you guys can improve this a bit and make it something people would actually want.

@Jack Spirko

I'm not with PPP, but saw the roll out presentation at PostieCon in Vegas. What you describe as I understood it, is exactly what SocialSpark will do as I understood that.

This initial staged roll out is just the PPP side of things. That will all be eclipsed by SocialSpark whenever that rolls out.

What I have seen of Social Spark is even worse. If I specify my link at Social Spark I am forced into a nofollowed link. Gee, great, wonderful! Just what I wanted for Christmas. (I assume brett you get sarcasm?)
