For months and months BloggersChoiceAwards.com has been a highly-trafficked, very popular site in the blogosphere. It's been a huge success and as many of you know there have even been a couple of celebrities campaigning to win in the "Best Celebrity Blogger" category. This is truly a testament to the power and reach of the blogosphere. That being said, the winners of the 2007 Blogger's Choice Awards were officially revealed at a VIP party this past Saturday night at TAO Las Vegas. Great news! Ross Mathews, intern for Jay Leno's Tonight Show, and Rosie O'Donnell are both in the top 3 site for the Celebrity Blog Category in the Blogger's Choice Awards!
Now we need some help from the Posties to recruit them! Your mission is to give Ross & Rosie your best pitch on why they should attend PostieCon and the BCA's party at Tao Las Vegas.
Some topics to consider:
- Perhaps you are coming and would like to meet the highest voted celebrity bloggers online today?
- Maybe your blog has been nominated within a top 3?
- Perhaps you would like to discuss blogging with Ross over a PPP yummy postini?
- Or is it you want to see them both on stage announcing the 2007 BCA winners?
Whatever your reasons, we think they would love to hear them! Remember, Rosie and Ross may see all these videos, so the better they are the more chances you have to fall into top 10 videos.
Let's do a little brainstorming, shall we? Here are a few ideas to get those creative juices bubbling and to help you get started:
- Puppets. Who doesn't like puppets? They're cheesy, funny, and can be made out of a paper bag or a sock.
- Rhyming. Why not write a ballad to Ross and Rosie about coming to PostieCon? You can act out your song, make it silly, and have fun with it. Let's have fun people :)
- Be a fan. How about a skit where you pretend to be Ross and Rosie's biggest fan! You can gush about the chance to meet them, having fun in PostieCon, and talk about how you can't complete each day without catching up on the latest news on their blog!
- Dress Up. Wouldn't it be fun to run into your closet and pull out that fancy dress or suit you only wore once? Dust it off and act like you're getting ready to be either Ross and/or Rosie's date to PostieCon. Talk about what you'll do when you're in Vegas, how fun PostieCon will be, and how proud you'll be when they win their coveted Best Celebrity Blogger award.
- Be famous. Pretend you're a celebrity - how about dressing like Britney Spears, Cher, John Travolta, or Arnold Schwarzenegger and lament not having been nominated for this awesome award and how you wish you could go. Talk about how Ross and Rosie should go and what they'll be missing out on if they don't!
1. Visit: www.postiecon.com and www.bloggerschoiceawards.com To learn more about the event.
2. Create a 30 second or less video that creatively recruits Ross and Rosie. The video should tell everyone why they should attend, and what they will be missing if they don't.
3. Focus on all that is surrounding PostieCon and the BCA Awards and how it will benefit all those who have voted for them on the BCA site.
6. Upload and email us your video at www.transferbigfiles.com - select your video and email it to postiecon(at)postiecon(dot)com. Videos specs are a .mpg/320x240/30 seconds or less. Rockstartup.com will be doing something special with them but it's a secret for now.
7. Deadline is October 17, 2007, by noon EST.
8. The 10 best videos will be selected by PPP and posted on our blog on October 18, 2007, for voting to determine who created the absolute BEST video.
9. The winner will be announced on Tuesday, October 23, 2007 by 6pm EST. He or she will win the ultimate bragging rights to carry into PostieCon!
Team Captains needed! Recruit a team and raise funds for this worthy cause!
The Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research. Held annually in hundreds of communities across the country, this inspiring event calls on volunteers of all ages to become champions in the fight against Alzheimer's! Since 1989, Memory Walk has raised more than $225 million and we want them to surpass all goals for 2007!
Alzheimer's has in fact affected a few of our families here at PayPerPost. One in particular staff member is Carri from the Customer Love Team. Carri’s grandmother has been diagnosed with the disease. The impact it has had on her but her family is tremendous. It was very touching to me as my great Aunt had Alzheimer’s. Here is what Carri had to say:
"We still stand. All of us, together, but we are not the same. Alzheimer’s has changed us all. It has taken something pure from us and replaced it with darkness and sharpness, insensibility and endless bureaucracy. It can’t, it won’t destroy us, but it has left its mark. A twisted, jagged scar that will never fully heal".
Please grab this opportunity to help Alzheimer’s Association spread the word that Memory Walk Team Captains are needed, nationwide, NOW! Be sure to encourage your readers to sign up early to ensure enough time to recruit a team and raise funds for this worthy cause!
Posties who sign up as a Team Captain and build a team may be selected through PPP Direct to blog about their ongoing Memory Walk Team Captain experience! Are you passionate about the cause? Can you raise a minimum of $200 (it’s so easy, if you have at least 10 people on a team, that’s only $20 per person! Just have at least 9 friends, family or coworkers join your team!)
Here at PayPerPost we are even building a local team for the Orlando walk on October 6th. Check out how easy it was for Karen to sign up as our Team Captain and build our fundraising page at the Memory Walk website: http://mworlando.kintera.org/payperpost
Robb has signed up as a Team Captain in New York for October 21st and two Posties have already created teams that you can locate through their blog posts:
Do it for someone you love
Please join me in Orlando
Other Posties have even decided to sponsor PayPerPost Postie Memory Walkers:

The video above was made before we had Travis. There was no music and the editing needs some help for sure. In many ways this was the first episode of RockStartup, it's when I first had the idea. I recorded it on my digital camera and edited it in iMovie, we have come a long way. Sorry...that was a bit of a tangent. This video take me down memory lane.
Back to the Today Show!
This morning we were featured on the Today Show as a way to make money with an Internet Job! It wasn't a huge piece, but we did get a few minutes of fame and we have had lots of new Posties signing up today. Did you see it?! I was like a giddy school girl when I saw it. If anyone can find the video online let me know where it is.
I am off on vacation starting tomorrow. I am taking my girlfriend to London and Paris for a much needed vacation. I'll still be checking in on a daily basis and sharing pics from the trip. Be good to everyone while I am gone ;)
"...I still have lots of friends back there in the upper echelons of the magazine business. I just got a ping from one of them who knows the folks over at Forbes. He told me that your Posties totally rallied for you and that the author of that Forbes piece on PPP got hammered with hate mail from your bloggers. You've got a loyal posse - and the folks at the top of old media have taken notice to your existence. Just a touch of pleasant intelligence from behind the glossy paper curtain!"
Way to go Posties. Stand up for what we are doing here. It may not always be easy but together we are changing the name of the game... Viva la revolucion!
Webware.com is the site where online users can learn about new and useful Web applications. Check them out here www.webware.com. Remember to get your vote in for PayPerPost before June 11 2007.

I am still waiting on some new testimonial videos guys. I use this type of stuff all the time in our press efforts and some of them will get you on TV ; ) I would love to have some newer videos to share on our site. The more creative the better! Colleen how about updating that old video?!?
Mentioning NYC, I'm reminded of the time Britt & Ted went to visit the "Today" show last Fall. Well I did some digging and found a bunch of photos I don't think we ever shared! Looks like fun, and folks were jazzed about PayPerPost. Britt & Ted handed out posters, t-shirts, and other swag.
Here's a photo album I created with the ultra-cool Bubbleshare:
Speaking of the "Today" show, did you know Meredith Viera is nominated for "Best Celebrity Blogger" at BloggersChoiceAwards.com? Check it out:
We'll keep you updated!

If you want to skip ahead look at the screen shot below and fast forward to that point.
There is a surprise ending to this podcast that is well worth the lengthy (and at times heated) debate. If there was any doubt in your mind about my commitment to the Posties or this company I dare say it should exist no longer. I love our Posties, especially the ones I have met in person.
As a primer to the main event here is a video I made the night before.
Unfortunately, Jason declined to allow us to tape the show for RockStartup. There is will be a little delay between the taping tomorrow and the podcast itself. I will embed the video he posts when it is live. This should be interesting to say the least.
Just because it scares Jason and Jason doesn't understand why PayPerPost works doesn't mean it is evil. Paid search scared people too. They called it evil, they said it would ruin the Internet. Last time I checked Google and Overture are doing ok. If those entrepreneurs would have listened to naysayers like Jason that multi-billion dollar industry wouldn't exist.
Crazy to think that Jason works for a VC firm. I guess he is looking for the next big thing so long as it doesn't break any rules of convention or involve an original idea that some may not agree with.
The level of hypocrisy spewing from that big mouth over the past 6 months has been borderline comical. I keep thinking to myself .. Is the same guy that was trying to buy off Digg users actually criticizing us?? Is he high? Did all that money make him forget what he has tried to do in the past (quite unsuccessfully I might add). People have called him out on it... yet the cesspool of misinformation continues to grow.
A few days ago Jason posted this article:
http://www.calacanis.com/2007/02/28/blah blah
In it he once again claims PayPerPost is evil. Despite all we have done he continues to banter on about disclosure, yet Dr. Donkey continues to mislead his readers.
Just a day before he commented he gains nothing for carrying ThisNext ads on his site. If I remember correctly ThisNext was founded by a close friend of Jason's, Jason has a board role and he owns stock in ThisNext -- something he doesn't make clear in-line with his ThisNext product recommendations on his blog or at ThisNext.com and he directly contradicts with his comment here:
http://thermalblog.co.uk/the-golden-donkeyp/#comments
Jason Calacanis:
"I have no ads on my blog. Zero. Perhaps you think the ThisNext shopcaster is an ad? It's not, but rather just products I like or don't like...I get paid nothing for putting them on thisnext."
Basically what Jason is saying is it's ok not to disclosure, so long as you are only getting compensated indirectly through stock, and so long as Jason stands to profit. This is great news! Everybody should start promoting their own company without any disclosures of that relationship!
Gimme a break Donkinator.
At a time when PPP is setting the gold standard for product review transparency (required disclosure, in-post disclosure badges, disclosure policies) and ThisNext doesn't even have the word "disclosure" in its ToS ( http://www.thisnext.com/company/terms/ ) your deceptive comment is just too much.
Jason recently sent me an email:
"The concept of disclosure is to inform people and your efforts to date don't do that, and in fact they are designed to NOT be seen by folks. "
Hmmm... pretty hard to miss a disclosure badge Jason. Where is yours?
People don't like to be deceived, do you?
Stop counting your money, get off that high horse for a bit and take some time to update your own site with some disclosures. I am sure that your readers would appreciate it.
For the past couple of months I have been listening to rants from the likes of Jason Calacanis, Jeff Jarvis and Michael Arrington. Those guys have been blabbing on about PayPerPost and our bloggers while at the same time collecting fat paychecks from the direct or indirect income their blog generates. Every time Calacanis makes another ludicrous statement about PayPerPost more people cover it, talk about it and make him more visible. It's brilliant really. For the most part I have shrugged off the personal attacks and rampant spreading of misinformation, but sometimes I feel a correction is required (see the confrontation with Jeff Jarvis below).
In the back of my head I have a little trophy shelf. On it sits about 20 trophies, each in the shape of a small golden donkey. Every time I see someone going off on PayPerPost without the facts they get a nomination, and those who continue to rant may eventually win the prestigious Golden Donkey.
Well, it's award season and I have another nomination.
Yesterday David Berkowitz wrote an interesting article for Search Insider. The article was relatively fair (though skewed) but one part of the article made me giggle like a school girl. In the article, David claims that traditional blogger relations are "exponentially more effective" than a service like PayPerPost.
I know David. I know he is a smart guy. I was dumbfounded by this article.
I have got to tell you something David, I founded PayPerPost specifically because traditional blogger relations delivers terrible ROI. I don't know how you measure "effectiveness", but I measure it in terms of the return I provide for my clients, not the amount of time I can bill as an agency "researching appropriate blogs, developing pitches relevant to each blogger, and then making the pitch". Agencies love traditional blogger relations because it is so cost intensive, they can easily bill a client tens of thousands of dollars for "blogger relations" with no promise of anyone writing a single post.
With PayPerPost you only pay for results and those results are immediate. Advertisers can "pitch" to tens of thousands of bloggers at the same time. It is extremely efficient, targeted by topic, low cost and... (trumpets...ba baa ba bummmm) "effective". Dollar for dollar, mention for mention, click for click you can't match the value of PayPerPost. How do I know? Because I ran an agency for years that did traditional blogger relations. I know what it costs and I know how long and time intensive it is. It is true that you can deliver results with the traditional method, but not nearly as quickly or as cost effectively.
The funny thing is that David never created a PayPerPost campaign yet he feels compelled to provide professional guidance to other marketers. I think this article is professionally irresponsible. Can David quantify the statements he is making? I don't see how that would be possible without doing some comparative analysis between the traditional approach and the PayPerPost approach. Where is the data that supports the "exponentially more effective" statement? If I was going to make a statement like that I would have at least run a few medium size campaigns with each method and compared the results. David didn't bother to run even one.
So why would someone make such statements? See the Calacanis reference above. There is simply no basis for his argument, and for that I would like to nominate him for a Golden Donkey.

The decision has been made by Nick at Performancing to make the Metrics platform Open Source and I believe that is a wise decision. Nick is a great guy and I wish him much luck with the other aspects of Performancing.com. Nick did what he could to keep the hosted version of Metrics running, but in the end it just wasn't a fit.
We will be seeking another analytics solution to integrate into the PayPerPost marketplace. If your company offers a robust analytics solution with consistently accurate data reporting please feel free to drop us a line. We are very interested in partnerships and would love to find a service we can endorse and bring to our Posties.
Performancing.com will be kept separate from PayPerPost. They will remain two individual brands with their own unique offerings. Performancing members will not automatically become Posties, however they will be able to easily activate a PayPerPost account. Posties will also be able to easily create a Metrics account.
Advertisers will gain the ability to segment opportunities partially based on blog traffic data provided by Metrics. Blogs with more traffic will qualify for higher paying opportunities. This is good news for many of PayPerPost's and Performancing's higher traffic blogs.
I recognize that not all Performancing members desire to utilize the PayPerPost marketplace at this time. I respect that desire and PayPerPost will not force Performancing members to become Posties.
I am well aware of the controversial nature of our service, however I believe over time Performancing members will see the PayPerPost concept become mainstream much like paid search, paid links and affiliate programs. I look forward to the day when we can provide you with great blogging tools along with a way to truly monetize your blog.
I thank Nick for trusting us with the community he has built and can assure you we will take great care of Performancing's members. We are all ears guys, we want to make this work for everyone.

Warning : Questionable Language.
My heart felt thanks to:
MindComet Peeps - For letting me pursue this venture knowing my baby is in good hands. Keep it crazy and never forget what makes that place so great.
Flaming Tamale - I can say nothing more than you rock.
Dan - For seeing the potential in the marketplace and embracing the raw energy, creativity and intelligence of our company and people.
Michael - For asking the tough questions day one and pushing so hard on advertiser ROI.
Josh - For understanding the big picture and believing in free market forces.
Jim Boyle - For your commitment to get PPP funded at such an early stage.
Bo Peabody - For giving me the book that helped me make it through this whole process.
Tim Draper - For your willingness to fund a company outside of Silicon Valley.
Ohhhhh...
and Colleen - For being the poster girl for PPP. Your enthusiasm is contagious and your commitment as a Postie is unquestionable. You helped prove that we had something here.
So what does this mean for you? It means you need to strap on your shoes and grab some spray cheese because we are all going for a ride! We now have the backing to build out the company and enhance our service offering more quickly. PayPerPost will be aggressively targeting new advertisers and Posties, creating a larger marketplace with more opportunity for everyone involved.
I thank all of you for helping us get to this point and making this happen. You are all part of something wonderful that will only grow with time.
We are going to try to keep these videos going so long as we have something worth showing you... and I am pretty sure that is a safe bet for at least the next year or so. Especially with our HUGE announcement coming next week (let the rumors begin).
Today's featured blogger is none other than Dan Rua. Dan was our 705th blogger, he joined in early July and since then has provided excellent content both PayPerPost-related as well as his own entries. He had also joined as an Advertiser in order to help spread the word about little Tyler's rare disease, Dystonia. Dan also wrote a piece that stirred the controversial pot in the Diggosphere, which featured another blogger, Joshua's, video.
Here is Dan's interview:

When did you join PayPerPost, Why?
Ahh, I can remember like it was only a month ago when it was actually July 10, 2006 – that will always be a special day for me. I joined because it reminded me of GoTo/Overture's early paid-search controversy (and ultimate monster success) at my prior venture fund and, as an early stage venture capitalist, I wanted to see PPP's model firsthand.
If you could pick one word to describe yourself, what would it be?
Passionate
PayPerPost:: Money as You::
Actually, when I started digging into PPP I thought it was just about money. If so, it would be doomed for failure. I've learned that it's about helping people do what they love to do, share blogs, videos, pictures, podcasts with the rest of the world- with a honeypot of interesting PPP topics and a tangible payback. Money and topics may be the carrot, but the end result is an explosion of original content (some sponsored, even more unsponsored) and a community that allows market forces to increase the quality of consumer generated media spanning all CGM domains and social networks.
We say potato, you say:
You say potato, I say "have you ever seen what happens when you drop one of those in a Diet Coke?"
What do the dictionary, the planet Jupiter, and Oprah have in common?
Tom Cruise jumped up and down when he visited all of them (OK, so maybe the dictionary jump was about looking taller at his wedding)
What is your favorite Font?
Whatever font they use to script Ricky Bobby running around in his underwear- that guy kills me.
Did you see Snakes on a Plane? Your thoughts?
Are you kidding? If mondo blog buzz can't get me to see a movie the whole premise must really, really, really suck.
Do you have any pets?
One cat, Periwinkle: a smoke Himalayan who we buzz cut all but her mane to look like a lion!
Do you know what a Muggle is? What is it?
Isn't that a blogger who hasn't tapped PPP's mojo, yet?
Describe your favorite outfit when you were in your teens?
No favorite but here's a tasty mix:
- Torn, old long Air Force jacket, torn knee jeans with frayed cuffs, knit flat cap, combat boots (think mashup of John Cusack from Say Anything and Emilio Estevez from Repo Man)
- The earliest skinny, knee-length, plaid surfing shorts and a surfboard under my arm (think Sean Penn from Ridgemont High)
- Maroon patent leather, pointy dress shoes. Grey baggy pants with side zippers to show vertical maroon inserts. Maroon dress shirt with thin black tie and silver collar bar. (think MC Hammer- better yet, save the brain cells and just forget about this one)
What's your favorite character Robin Williams played?
Mork from Ork- totally fresh character in an age of Three's Company and Bob Newhart.
What was the first website you remember visiting?
NCSA.UIUC.EDU- I was at IBM, playing with archie, finger, gopher, whois and other 'new' networking apps, downloaded Mosaic and surfed from UIUC outward- I think I surfed the whole Internet back then (I've since learned there was an orphan Al Gore page I missed). I actually pitched IBM to start archiving the net while it was still small enough to get your arms around (pre-Alexa/Archive.org) and they asked whether my time might be better spent delivering the next version of our mainframe email product.
Have you ever seen a ghost?
Dude, you're freaking me out. Wait, who am I talking to? I'm the only one here, I think. I have seen some elite bloggers who will be ghosts if they don't realize the Consumer Generated Advertising revolution has begun. Power to the people!
It looks like we are going to be announcing some big things in the near future. Stay tuned for all the juicy details.
One of the first things on our list is a marketing campaign to promote our service. I believe in the concept of Consumer Generated Advertising so much that I am going to have you, our wonderfully creative and crazy bloggers create our commercial instead of an ad agency. That's saying a lot given the fact that I have founded two ad agencies.
I have created an opportunity requesting videos. I am going to be giving $2000 to the creator of each video we decide to run on television as part of the campaign. I know y'all will rock it and I can't wait to see what is developed. Be creative!
